Weekend Getaway

Feeling the urge to escape the routine and explore somewhere new, without straying too far from home? Whether you're looking for history, nature, or ocean breezes, you're in luck. One of the best parts about living in Richmond is how easy it is to plan a quick weekend getaway. When our real estate agents want to get away for the weekend, they head to these exciting destinations that are no more than a two-hour drive from Richmond homes for sale.

  • Williamsburg
Williamsburg may be only an hour away by driving time, but a visit will take you back centuries in time. As the 18th-century capital of Virginia, Williamsburg still retains many of the buildings and other features that offer a look at the city's historic past. Colonial Williamsburg, the world's largest living history museum, includes 301 acres of art museums, government buildings, and private homes, along with interpreters in authentic clothing who share fascinating stories. Spend the night in an 18th-century home or one of the stunning full-service hotels located on the grounds. Hours are 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. daily. Visit the website for ticket options.

  • Virginia Beach
Virginia's prime oceanfront location is best experienced at Virginia Beach, recognized as a top destination by sources such as Southern Living and National Geographic Traveler. A drive of just under two hours takes you to the city's iconic boardwalk, cited by the Discovery Channel as one of the most popular ones in the country. In addition to swimming, boating, and other water activities, the beaches are the site of entertainment such as the Oceanfront Concert Series, which is free to all guests. Even local culture is well-represented in the ViBe Creative District, which is a hub for all types of artistic endeavors. Be sure to take the one-mile self-guided tour of the district's collection of murals.

  • George Washington & Jefferson National Forests
Sprawled across 1.8 million acres of woodlands and waterways, the George Washington & Jefferson National Forests will have you quickly forgetting that you're a mere two hours from Richmond. Nearly 2,000 miles of trails incorporate segments of the famous Appalachian Trail, while Virginia's highest natural point, the 5,729-foot-tall Mount Rogers, can also be found in the dog-friendly park. If you're ready to leave dry land, there are spots for swimming and fishing as well as motorized and non-motorized boating. Many areas of the forest are open 24/7, but a $30 pass is required to enter the day-use areas that have specific hours.

  • Pocahontas State Park - 10301 State Park Rd., Chesterfield, VA 23832
Found yourself with an unexpected free day? At a short 20 miles from Richmond, Pocahontas State Park is a perfect destination for a spur-of-the-moment getaway. Located near Chesterfield County homes for sale, the pet-friendly park has 90 miles of trails that are a big draw for hikers and bikers. Three lakes afford great opportunities for fishing and boating, and families love the Aquatic Center. With a toddler pool, fountain wet deck, three pools, and a pair of water slides, this attraction has something for everyone. Weekend parking fees are $10 per day through October, with additional fees for swimming and equipment rental. Pocahontas State Park is open seven days a week from 7:30 a.m. - dusk.

  • Reedville
If you enjoy getting off the beaten path, plan a trip to explore Reedville. After a drive of less than 90 minutes, you'll find yourself in a small one-time fishing village filled with scenic views and stunning architecture. The Reedville Historic District, with its centerpiece of Victorian-style mansions on Millionaire's Row, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Take a cruise across the Chesapeake Bay and immerse yourself in local history on Tangier Island.
